The Tribes and Songs

From

Middle Earth

Introduction

I have returned wearily from the stronghold of Helms Deep, from a hard bloody fight in the region of Rohan, of the horse lords, and have mourned for my fallen Rohanish comrades who stood against the orc’s charge, and who were cloven and who fell to the cold ground never to rise again. And also for Hama, captain of the King’s guard, who stood his ground under the shadow of theHornburg and who also fell. But I see my children run towards me calling my name. After I eat I sit down at the hard, smooth, wooden table and begin to write the history of Middle Earth’’s tribes and songs, and the history of It’s people unfolds.

The Dwarves

The Children of the Earth

The Dwarf is short and stocky. Some wear axes on their backs to fight with. Some Dwarves of Durin found a home in Moria in Khazad dum where many riches they found. Pearl , pale Opal, Mithrail, and many other jewels. . Their lamps were crystal hewn and shone forever undimmed.

And now I must show you the family tree of Durin’s folk,:

Durin the

Deathless

Durin v1

Nain 1

Thrain 1

I have shown you the family tree of Durin. But they mined away in the earth in search of more riches and mithril in greed, and they woke up a demon deep in the earth. It was one of Melkor’s servants the Balrog, a creature of fire and shadow, that was feared by the dwarves and all the people of Middle Earth. And it would be the Dwarves ruin in Moria in Khazad Dum!

“What it was could not be seen: it was like a great shadow, in the middle of which was a dark form, of man-shape, maybe, yet greater, and a power and terror seemed to be in it and go before it.”

The Elves

Children of The Eldar

The elves, the lords of the silent and mysterious forest, once lived in Kor in the time of the Aniur and Melkor when the great gems , the Silmarillis, were made. But their city was destroyed and theirSilmarillis were stolen by Melkor, and they went to different places in middle earth. Some Elves went to the golden wood of Lothlorien and others to Rivendell, and also to the legendary city of Gondolin. Elrond and Arwen and many of his people, and also Glorfindel, fled to Rivendell, which was in a deep and green valley near the dark and evil misty mountains, veiled from orcs. Glorfindel ‘s name means Golden Hair. ‘Glor’ means golden and ‘Fi n’ means hair in the elven toungue.

Glorfindel the elf lived in the First age and was the lord of the House of The Golden Flower and was among his fellow elves who traveled from the Undying Lands in defiance of the lordly Valar on a quest to retrieve the Silmarils. They were the Seeing Stones made by the Elves, stolen by Melkor later known as Morgoroth. He fought the Balrog, a creature of fire, and plunged down to his death still bravely fighting the Balrog. And the eagleThorondor found Glorfindel still dead and brought him back and the great elf lord was buried in a green hill covered with yellow flowers.. The Elves mourned for him long in the cold morning, ere the sun rose. (Elves could not be killed by natural causes but they could die by violence like Glorfindel had .) Then the elf Glorfindel went to the Halls of Waiting to be judged, and later he would be restored to his bodily form and would return to Middle Earth !

Other elves went to Mirkwood where Legolas came from in the third age.

Those who went to Lothlorien or the Golden wood, where the leaves of that wood grow golden as they fall to the ground, silent and old, built their houses in the smooth tall trees on flat platforms for their people and lord and lady, Celeborn and Galadriel fair beyond reason master of one of the three rings which were made by the elves. In the mighty branches of a tree that stood against the sky like a watch tower they built there a Palace fair to look upon and many lights shone from it’s branches. And there twines fair stairs around the great trunk of the tree in Cerin Amroth in Lothlorien, in the Golden wood.

Rohan

The Land of Horse Lords

There was once a great hardy race of men who were called the Rohirrim, the Horse Lords for their love of their sleek smooth horses, the greatest of them Shadowfax lord of horses. The land of Rohan was once part of the land of Gondor of the white tree, and was given to the Rohirrim when they were led by Eorl the Young to the aid of Gondor. After the bloody battle the king of Gondor rewarded the Rohirrim with the wide and grassy plains of the region of Rohan by the white mountains. Later, they built the Golden Hall of Meduseld where many of the kings sat ages on the golden throne in Edoras with their counsel. And in Eastemnet in Rohan near the Entwash there were pools and marshes, and in some places the grass was as high as a mounted horseman’s knees. And in the northern part of Eastemnet there are the rolling downs. North of the downs there is the grassy rolling upland region of the Wold. West of Snowbourn was the region of the Westfold , were the Stronghold of Rohan stood which was called Helms Deep.

Many years later the king Théoden took in his care the kingship of Rohan, but was corrupted by Grima Wormtongue the servant off Saruman. Later, a company of Uruk–hai crossed the Emyn Muil and Grima Wormtongue told Théoden not to let his nephew Eomer, Third Marshal of the Mark,, attack the Uruk-hai sent by Saruman who were bearing the Hobbits. But Eomer attacked the orcs and wiped them out by the borders of Fangorn and the Hobbits escaped into the forest. But he was made an outlaw and was arrested. Then a few days later Gandalf , Aragorn, Gimli, and Legolas of the Woodland realm came to the Golden Hall where Gandalf brought Théoden back into the light and Eomer was let free. Later, they left for Helms Deep and ere they left Eomer addressed the soldiers saying,

Oaths you have taken. Now fulfill them all!

To lord and land. Forth Eorlingas !

In the battle off Helms Deep the orcs were using a strange device made by Saruman that blew up the wall and many ladders were let up, and the Rohirrim fought bravely but were drove back into the Keep. In the battle Gimli saved Eomer’s life and out side the narrow space of the deep the dwarf Gimli and Eomer, with a company of Rohirrim, stood together and drew blades together against the orcs that rushed forward through the gap in the wall. The black flag of Saruman with the white hand on it was fluttering in the cold, icy wind in the midst of the orcs, who were rushing forward eagerly for the meat and blood they would have if they won the battle for their master Saruman. But it was not to be, for in the morning Théoden with his company of men on horses rushed forward and led a charge against the orcs, and pushed them to Helms Dike and Gandalf returned with one thousand men of the West Fold and their leader Erkenbrand. The orcs fled in fear into a forest of ents sent by Treebeard , also named Fangorn. After the Battle of Helms Deep the Riders of Rohan marched to Isengard and found out that Treebeard with many ents had destroyed Isengard and imprisoned Saruman the White in the black tower of Orthanc. Saruman addressed Théoden on the pinnacle of Orthanc saying in a soothing voice,

“ Can we not be friends like we were before. Can we not take counsel together.”

But Théoden told Saruman,

“We will have peace. Yes we will have peace. When you pay for the burning of the Westfold and the children and women that lie slain there. And for the body of Hama that was hewn by the orcs at the gate of the Hornburg as he lay dead. Then we will have peace. When you hang from a gibbet at your window for the sport of your own crows.”

And Gandalf broke the staff of Saruman and cast him out of the order of the Wizards and imprisoned him in Orthanc. Then lord Théoden ordered that all of his Rohirrim would accompany him to Harrowdale to see the mustering of his men.

At Harrowdale a messenger of Gondor came to Lord Théoden. Carrying the red arrow, a symbol that Lord Denethor, Steward of Gondor, was calling the Rohirrim to fulfill the oath of Eorl, the messenger also told him that the armies of Mordor were standing out side the white walls of Minas Tirith. Théoden then got ready to march to Gondor with his Rohirrim and fulfill the oath of Eorl the young. Théoden set off with 6,000 men to the aid of Gondor and left 4,000 men to guard Rohan when he was gone. But unknown to the king, Eowen his sister-daughter and Merry Brandybuck also went with the army to the aid of Gondor. The Rohirrim, lead by Théoden, arrived at the Pelennor fields around the White City at dawn on March 15th and Théoden addressed them saying to them,

Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!

Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!

spears shall be shaken, shield be splintered,

a sword- day, a red day, ere the sun rises!

Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!

And with a nay the horse Snowmane reared up in the air and Théoden drew his sword and the Rohirrim charged forward. And as the Rohirrim rushed forward the sun broke through the clouds and the orcs fled screaming, and many orcs were trampled under foot or were hewn down as they ran cursing and screaming. But as the Rohirrim rode after the fleeing orcs they saw animals lumbering forward, with men on platforms on the animals backs and orcs rushing forward behind them. They were Olyphants whose tusks were armed with spikes to impale horse and rider. As the battle raged the lord of all the ring wraiths, the Witch King, met Théoden lord of the mark, and Théoden was wounded to his death. But before the fell beast could devour the horse and Théoden, Eowen stood and barred the way. For she had seen Théoden fall. And she cried aloud to the Witch King ,” If you want him come and get him!” And the Witch King told her in a cold rasping voice,

“No man can kill me “. But as the Witch King finished speaking she drew her sword and slashed at the fell beast’s head which fell rolling to the ground. The beast fell and writhed on the ground then was still. The Witch King stood with a mace whose handle was held in his clammy, cold hand. He swung the mace which whistled past Eowen’s head but hit her shield and she fell on the ground. The Witch King reached over and grabbed Eowen’s neck pulling her up but let go for Merry had stabbed him in the back. But as he did his blade shattered into splinters of hot iron. As the Witch King let go kneeling on the ground Eowen grabbed her sword and plunged it in the his mask. As she did it the Witch King shriveled into nothing, only a cloak lying on the ground, and she felt pain run through her and she fell down. That is how Eomer found her lying on the ground wounded. Eomer tore his hair and wept and the battle rage came over him and he saw the Black Ships and drew his sword Guthwine and cast it into the sun light and caught it singing

Out of doubt, out of dark to the days rising

I came singing in the sun, sword unsheathing.

To hope’s end I rode and to hearts end breaking:

Now for wrath, now for ruin and a red nightfall!

The Rohirrim came rushing forward towards the ships which were speeding through the water. But as they looked they saw that the banner with the White Tree was fluttering in the wind. Gimli, Legolas, and Aragorn who had passed through the paths of the dead climbed ashore from the boats with the Dead Men of Harrowdale behind them and rushed over the Pelennor fields and through the White city leaving no orcs alive in their path. The orcs screamed with fear and ran away but many were overtaken and were killed and the Pelennor fields were strewn with bodies. The battle was done and Rohan and Gondor had won. They found Merry and took him to the Houses of Healing where Eowen was. But Aragorn came and healed Eowen and Merry, fulfilling an old prophecy.

When the black breath blows

and deaths shadow grows

and all lights pass,

come athelas! Come athelas!

Life for the dying

In the king’s hand lying!

After that Eomer with his company went with Aragorn to attack the Black Gate. When they got there the full force of Saron that he had been mustering was let loose on Aragorn’s force. The good fought with valor but the evil were slowly closing in on them. Then on the horizon they saw the eagles lead by Gwaihir the Windlord swooping and attacking the fell beasts. And at the same moment the Ring of power was destroyed by Frodo and Sam and Gollum's teeth and the black tower fell crashing to the ground lying in ruin. After that Eomer married an elf, Lothiriel of Dol Amroth, and had a son called Elfwine. And so ends the History of my poeple.

Gondor

The Land of the White Tree

The Gondorians lived in the land of the white tree by the Gladden Fields.
